Can I Be Christian and Gay at the Same Time?

Originally posted on 5/24/2011

This question is asked of many people who are dealing with the idea of being a Christian and being homosexual simultaneously. We have to realize one thing: there are two different worlds between being gay and being Christan.

To be Christian is to be "Christ-like". A definition for being a Christian would be:
A Christian is a person who adheres to Christianity based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as recorded in the bible. Christians also believe Jesus is the Messiah prophesied in the Bible, the Son of God, and the savior of mankind from their sins. They believe in the doctrine of the Trinity ("tri-unity"), a description of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The term "Christian" is also used as "all that is noble, and good, and Christ-like."- [Source]
Now, to define being gay or homosexuality would be:
Homosexuality is romantic and/or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectional, or romantic attractions" primarily or exclusively to people of the same sex. [Source]
So as you can see the two terms are of two different worlds. They do not relate to one another. The bible clearly speaks that to love the same sex is an abomination as in other sexual sins:
Leviticus 18:22:  "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."
Leviticus 20:13: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
Many times people read the bible or have a distorted view to what the bible states and say this is not true. But it is clear in the text that God does not approve or will tolerate homosexuality. It goes against all that is natural and God's intention for our lives.

For anyone to say "I am a Gay Christian" is truly living against God's spoken word. Our Father does not ordain anything that goes against his principles. And the bible states:

Numbers 23:19: "God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind."
Though people can say 'I believe in God and I am gay', they do no know God as Lord and still accept the lifestyle that he despises as homosexuality. God can not and will not lie. His word is bond and 'gay Christians' do not exist. A gay person can not profess to know and live for Jesus Christ and still live their days opposite to His (God's) word. It simply is not possible to please Him this way.

Now many gays just refuse to believe that a loving God does not approve a 'feeling, emotion, or love" for the same sex. The truth of the matter is: God spoke of many, many sexual sins that He does not approve. In Leviticus 18: 6-24 mentions a entire list of sexual sins including homosexuality. So, no one  is picking on same sex lovers. Romans 2:11 says: "For there is no respect of persons with God." This means God has no partiality or favoritism for anyone. If he states these things are sins, then He will not change His mind later. He shows no favoritism to one person or group or another. Again, His word is bond.

To truly be a Christian, one has to follow the bible word for word and accept it as His law and if you love God, you will graciously do so with no complaints. The problem that occurs is people may read the bible and not want to agree with what it states and as Christians, this is sin. We have to believe that everything God spoke in His word is true and binding. We can not add nor subtract from His word at anytime. If we truly love and honor Him, true Christians will submit and honor Him. Period.

The issues that occur for others that don't submit to Him fully, is when they believe some parts of the bible and not others according to their life, feelings and yes- lust. So to answer the question: "Can I Be Christian and Gay at the Same Time?", we would have to say absolutely not.

God loves us and He wants us to live for Him but we must honor, obey and keep His decrees. We have to let go of our personal desires, repent and live by His word. Then we can call ourselves Christians and that's acceptable by God.

  1. I think you can be a christian and be gay. It is against how God's objectives for us, but EVERYONE falls short of his objectives. A person who has an addiction, is violent, a thief, slanderous is just as guilty under God's law. It does not mean we cannot be a christian and ask earnestly for forgiveness of our shortcomings. The opposite of ALL our unchristian mistakes is holiness. If we try to live a life of holiness and repentence, we are still his children and forgiven.

  2. Cat, I'm so sorry you did not comprehend what the scriptures states about this subject. There is no way anyone can please God and be gay. And there is no way anyone can profess to be gay and Christian. By being gay is wrong in His word, so how can you make a wrong a right by saying you are Christian. There are many people who believe to know God but to truly follow Him, no one can deny the scriptures.

    God bless and come again.
